SITE INVESTIGATION
Benchmark and TurnKey engineers and environmental scientists have investigated over 100 sites impacted by solid waste, hazardous waste, petroleum and hazardous materials. They have analyzed a broad spectrum of organic, inorganic, and radionuclide contamination in all environmental media (i.e. soil, groundwater, surface water, sediments, biota, and air) from the automotive, primary and secondary metals, mining, electronics, pharmaceutical, chemical, pulp & paper, food processing, tanning, brewing, waste management, petroleum, gas, and electric power industries. The scope of these investigations include: facility audits; phase I & II site assessments; remedial investigations including human health and ecological risk assessments at Superfund sites; remedial facility assessments and investigations at RCRA sites; and hydrogeologic investigations. We carefully plan our investigations to balance the need to obtain sufficient data for design and remediation cost estimates against the desire to keep investigation costs down.
This
National Priority List (NPL) site, located on the banks of Cattaraugus Creek
in Gowanda, NY, was historically operated as an animal-glue and adhesives
manufacturing facility. Benchmark was hired to perform a remedial
investigation and feasibility study (RI/FS) at the site to investigate the
extent of contamination from past disposal of production residuals and
develop a cleanup approach.
Delineation of
petroleum-impacted soils at a 210-acre former steel and coke plant in Western
NY (right) relied heavily on use of field screening instruments and visual
assessment by an experienced geologist. This approach in combination with
pre-determination of likely contaminants and sources based upon historical
site use maps expedited the project schedule and saved thousands of dollars in
avoided drilling and analytical costs.
