SITE REMEDIATION

Benchmark and TurnKey staff have performed: feasibility and treatability studies; value engineering; remedial designs; removal actions; construction and operation of interim and final remedial measures at over 75 sites, including 11 on the National Priority List and 7 RCRA corrective action sites. They have evaluated and successfully implemented cost-saving and innovative treatment technologies (e.g. in-situ and ex-situ low-temperature thermal, biological, and physicochemical), removal and containment methods for remediation of soil, river sediment, groundwater, surface water, and structures.
An
advanced oxidation process (AOP) unit (left) was installed in series with a low
profile air stripper as part of a groundwater remediation system at a central
New York manufacturing facility. The AOP unit combines high intensity UV light
and hydrogen peroxide to create hydroxyl radicals, which destroy volatile
organic compounds in the groundwater. AOP treatment avoided the need for costly
air emission controls on the stripper exhaust, saving thousands in capital and
operating expenses.
Successful remediation
projects must often overcome challenging construction issues while addressing
regulatory and technical concerns. At this Benchmark-lead design-build cleanup
site, low overhead clearance and the potential for cave-in of the building
floor required selection of proper construction equipment and benching of the
excavation. Contaminated vapor releases from the soils and heavy equipment
exhaust during remediation were addressed through ventilation and continuous
air monitoring.
